Ask me anything
It’s been over a year since Vanessa & I married on September 7, 2009, and it has been nothing short of a remarkable year. We look back at this year as an invaluable investment into our family, our community, and most importantly, each other.
What We’ve Been Doing: Some Highlights Among Many
* Realizing that Vanessa is the ham and I’m the cheese
* Family dinners EVERY Thursday night
* Celebrating our favorite babies being born and weddings!
* Sailing to Blake Island* The new year’s day Resolution Run & polar bear plunge into Lake Washington (sporting mullets & cutoff jeans)
Vanessa and I spent most of the year together in a small cottage in Bellevue (just east of Seattle), while Vanessa continued working at Seattle Children’s Hospital where she powered out long days on the surgical unit. Additionally, she taught nursing clinicals at Seattle Pacific University and Seattle University for aspiring nurses, and she started her doula business, Expecting Joy— that coaches couples through the birthing process.
My work has been a dizzying trilogy of startups, non-profits, and marketing work. I cut my teeth deeper in the technology startup world on a project called IntegrityID.com, a new online membership association of people committed to integrity. Additionally, I helped launch an anti-human trafficking coalition in Seattle called Seattle Against Slavery, where I now serve on the board of directors. Most recently, I have been working with my friends at Pear Press to promote a groundbreaking new book by New York Times bestselling author, Dr. John Medina, called Brain Rules for Baby: How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to Five— if you have kids or ever want to have kids, you need to check out this book (available October 12th)!
What We’re Doing Now
Riding high on the encouragement, generosity, and prayers of friends and family, we’ve recently arrived in Oxford where I’m heading back to school. Four years ago, I first stumbled upon Oxford’s MBA programme, and a dream has now come true to study (social) entrepreneurship, strategy, and international business in Oxford with young leaders from around the world. We’ll be living here for the next year and are thrilled about this new adventure. Vanessa will also be hitting the books in a Master’s in Nurse Midwifery program, although she likes to think she’ll be backpacking Europe every weekend!
In a city known for it’s dreaming spires, we’re grateful for a new season ahead to dream big dreams, but also consider how these ideas might serve the world. We’re deeply humbled by this opportunity, and look forward to what might be one of the greatest years of our lives.
Leaving Seattle— leaving behind a tremendous community of friends and family— is hard, no getting around that. But we go forward with a confidence that this is the next bold step in our journey together, and we look forward to continuing to walk with each of you, despite perhaps the distance.
